pisses me off to no end when people on reddit or whatever complain that the show wouldve been better off without the tuunbaq.....did we watch the same show? the tuunbaq is everything, it held everything together. the tuunbaq is the main transformative element of the terror. the tuunbaq elevates the text beyond mere historical fact and lets it say something about the expedition's broader context of imperialism. it hunted the british men who were trampling on its home as a mere stopover, a side casualty, to finding the northwest passage (for, you know, "trade with china" after britain beat china into submission after the imperialist opium war). silna couldnt complete a proper ritual with it because of the british men - just as british colonizers have historically intruded and disrupted the practice of indigenous culture. and in the end the tuunbaq dies, after all the injuries it's taken from the british over the course of 10 episodes and finally chokes to death on the worst of them. because there's no escaping the reality of colonial history, and there is especially no fantastical escape for the colonizer. there's no proper way for us to move forward otherwise.
good historical fiction doesnt have to limit itself to accuracy - it needs empathy to draw out meanings in history using literary craft. thats what the tuunbaq means to me.... if you wanted a straight depiction of historical record, just go watch a documentary.. TUUNBAQ DENIERS DNI
#hell i would argue that historical inaccuracy is just as crucial to accuracy in historical fiction#if not even more so#for a different reason that you need an anchor to remind viewers that this is fiction#and should not be taken as substitute for historical record#though dont get me wrong i think historical fiction complements scholarly text too#because histfic gets to explore aspects of the same history in different ways you cant in academia - more emotional and the like#but its also a problem if histfic presents itself as accurate and ppl start looking at it as historical record itself#kind of like the crown (hate the crown)#so the question of 'how do we play with historical facts to reinforce the themes of the story' is crucial in histfic i think#the terror#the terror amc

had a terribly romantic nightmare where i was a corpse reanimated by sentient worms and tried to get back to my lover/best friend who regretfully killed me again at my request to release me from my torment and ensure they didn't meet the same fate. woke up feeling nauseously upset.
#🐉#body horror#?#it was also terror themed but that part is irrelevant since it didnt fit with the rest of the theme#like why was i worms fitzjames. unnecessary distraction

I like the posters in the tower of terror gift shop but they always stand out to me as very modern art styles so i wanted to try my hand at making a poster that's based in 1930s art! I also wanted to have carolyn in a pretty red dress like the posters but since strapless dresses weren't super popular yet i went for this halter gown based on one seen in The Women (1939)
plus a changing portrait variety because haunted mansion shouldn't get all the fun

how to watch tv if you liked the terror:
everything you watched before The Terror
The Terror (fundamentally alters you)
nonfiction shows and movies about the polar regions
the entire filmography of your favorite cold boy
The Terror again
shows and movies that pull apart your skull and reach in to permanently rearrange your synapses the same way The Terror does
shows and movies that take place on boats
The Terror several more times
#the terror#im just saying there's a Theme regarding what you want to watch before the terror vs what you want to watch after

Marina Dyachenko and Sergey Dyachenko, Vita Nostra (tr. Julia Meitov Hersey) • Mircea Suciu, Camouflage (2) • Agostino Arrivabene, Immutatio • Matthias Claudius, "Der Tod und Das Mädchen" • Henry Fuseli, The Nightmare • Dragan Bibin, Pull (edited) • Maria Kreyn, Angel's Back • Franz Wimmer, Death and the Maiden • Mel Chin, Bat and Dove • Ana Sanchez, Death and the Maiden
#vita nostra#death and the maiden#the gothic imagination#some dread chord#compilations#web weaving#marina dyachenko#sergey dyachenko#henry fuseli#dragan bibin#franz wimmer#myedit#lit tag#litedit#bookedit#quotes one compiles while listening to the lexa lexie edit of house of metal 🎶#VN's themes of fear and metamorphosis got me thinking#beyond the fourth wall breaking+gnosticism aspects‚ it's ultimately a coming of age story right (or coming of Self if we're being literal)#and i would argue the figure of death / metamorphosis (oftentimes one and the same) is a key element in such a narrative#we see the terror turn into begrudging acceptance of the metamorphosis#and sasha does accept it‚ to a degree. to the degree that kostya remarks on how alike she and farit have become#but the story does not end at her acceptance. it ends with her reaching beyond it (esp with the final lines of the book):#“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. [...] Do not be afraid.”#the idea that 'yes you are the final law of this world but not of them all. i can create another one'#also some of the other elements to consider wrt the figure of death concept:#the coins necessary for admittance to the university (reminiscent of those given to the dead as a payment for the ferryman)#+ the instances farit's appearance is likened to an illuminated skull (one of the most harrowing being the last temptation offer to sasha)#+ the students almost being considered dead to the outside world once they cross the threshold of the town#idk it's just a really interesting aspect for me#realizing i probably went a little overboard with all the quotes. well. just know that i had to hold myself back from adding even more 👩🏻💻

Today I'm thinking about the degree to which a person is responsible for the loyalty they inspire in others.
To be more specific, I'm continuing my rewatch and thinking about the degree to which Franklin is responsible for the loyalty he has inspired in poor wee David Young.
-
Young's death is a foregone conclusion, one that's been years in the making to the point where he thinks nothing of his gruesome symptoms, yes. But his lionisation of Franklin is also a not-insignificant factor in Young neglecting to speak up about his failing health.
"I didn't want to disappoint Sir John..."
Then, as he continues to decline, Young relinquishes any semblance of bodily autonomy he ever had. He's terrified at the thought of being cut open and examined, begs for Goodsir to promise to refrain from doing so. But again, his loyalty to Franklin wins out - he trusts completely that whatever Franklin orders must be for the good of the crew.
"If Sir John orders it I will do it..."
And even as death rapidly approaches, Young isn't entirely free in his own mind either. He's an extremely vulnerable young man, little more than a child really. He's 3000 miles from home. He's dying and there isn't a thing anyone can do to stop it. He's even separated from his fellow Terrors now, friends who clearly cared for his well-being and could have been at least a small comfort to him as he passed.
Young is so so frightened and he can't even fully admit to and confront that fact because of Franklin.
"And don't tell Sir John I was afraid..."
-
I'm not sure yet what my point is really.
Young's loyalty and devotion to Franklin serves to make his death just that more desperate and traumatic than it otherwise would have been and it just feels like there ought to be consequences for that somehow. It feels like someone ought to pay for the tragedy of it all...
#And that's not even touching properly on Franklin's own actions#Having Young ferried about needlessly and eulogising him in the most hollow self-serving way possible etc. etc.#Perhaps Franklin isn't responsible for the loyalty he inspires#But he's definitely responsible for his carelessness and callousness in the face of that loyalty#For getting the love he so dearly craved and failing utterly to recognise or really appreciate it once he had it#And in doing so acting in a manner that made the situation worse still#I have more thoughts on this#(Don't I always?)#The Terror#The Terror AMC#The Big Terror Rewatch#S01E01#Go for Broke#David Young#Sir John Franklin#And of course it's a recurring theme throughout the story#Loyalty and devotion to the point of delusion#Loyalty and devotion that only begets misery in turn#Crozier serving an Empire and an Admiralty that is actively prejudiced against him#Gibson remaining devoted to Hickey and being slaughtered like an animal in return#Maybe even Stanley so beholden to his oath to do no harm that he's prepared to burn them all in hopes of saving further suffering#I could go on but I've made myself emotional enough already
